My Guide To Understanding the Major LLM Models
In between Zoom calls and Salesforce updates guess what I did - wrote y'all an newsletter post!!! You're welcome 😉
I want this one to be up for debate and engagement. I'm not biased towards any model in particular, I do want to hear how YOU are leveraging AI models in your professional world.
Obviously you've heard of GPT-4, Gemini, Claude and LLaMa, but what the real difference?
Scouring the web as the true Data Nerd that I am - here's a simplified breakdown to help you navigate and understand the unique strengths and purposes of each.
1. GPT-4 by OpenAI
Strengths: Really good at natural language understanding and generation, detailed conversational skills, and creative tasks.
Best for: General-purpose conversational tasks, content creation, writing assistance, coding help, and personalized learning experiences.
Limitation: Known to hallucinate and give inaccurate or misleading responses
2. Gemini by Google DeepMind
Strengths: Great at integrating text, image, and multimodal inputs, strong at reasoning tasks, and adaptive conversational interactions.
Best for: Complex multimodal tasks, interactive user experiences, educational tools, and scenarios requiring enhanced reasoning.
Limitation: Still relatively new - still being gradually rolled out in the real-world so performance evaluations are still ongoing.
3. Claude by Anthropic
Strengths: Prioritizes safety, reliability, and ethical considerations in interactions, strong context-handling abilities.
Best for: Customer service interactions, professional environments, situations requiring highly responsible and cautious responses.
Limitation: May sometimes be overly cautious or conservative in responses, limiting creativity.
4. LLaMA by Meta (Open Source)
Strengths: Highly customizable, accessible, efficient for running on smaller hardware setups; popular among developers for fine-tuning.
Best for: Researchers, developers, and startups seeking cost-effective, customizable, and privacy-focused solutions.
Limitation: Generally requires additional fine-tuning and adaptation to specific tasks or domains for optimal results.
Yes, there are more, but again I said at the beginning I'm only focusing on the "major LLM models" - plus I have to get back to work...
How Do You Choose?
Creativity and Versatility: Choose GPT-4 if you need creativity, versatility, and ease of conversational engagement.
Multimodal and Reasoning: Gemini is your go-to for complex reasoning across multiple input types (text, images).
Safety and Ethics: Go with Claude when reliability, caution, and safety in conversations are critical.
Customization and Privacy: Select LLaMA if flexibility, customization, and cost-effectiveness are essential for your project.
Understanding these differences should empower you to choose the right LLM for your needs. Whether you're creating content, building interactive apps, or conducting research, there's an LLM suited just for you.
Moral of the story - One LLM does not fit all situations. I typically bounce between the top 3 listed to cross-reference results.
Alright - NOW you can roast me all you want - what is YOUR favorite LLM? Why?
